[Haunts]/ScareHouse, Pittsburgh's Home to Terror

A little while back I wrote about the new addition for ScareHouse this year. However, there's a lot more going on with the walls of the old Elks Lodge No. 932 than most would care to think about outside of their nightmares.

Since 1999, The ScareHouse has been terrifying everyone in the city of Pittsburgh and beyond...

This year's certainly no exception to that as they've added onto the the fear with an all new attraction, The Basement, but that's definitely not all. In the past I had the pleasure of scaring up my own fun in the labyrinth of madness that ScareHouse holds within. For two seasons I was down in the trenches scaring anything that moved and really came to love the place and the folks that run it. So to say it has a special place for me would be an understatement, especially considering that it was the last haunt that I've worked after nearly 20 years of acting.

UPDATE 8/27/13:

Newest video out for this year's ScareHouse!

Alright, with that bit of reminiscing out of the way, here's what to expect from this years' ScareHouse. Aside from "The Basement" experience there isn't much new, but I suspect the returning bits will have been updated in some way or another. It would surprise me if they sat still to be honest. Overall there's typically three separate experiences within these walls and while not exactly removed from each other, they are very different from one another.

First up? The Forsaken...

We never should have read the Latin.

A doorway has opened. And now the dark ruins of the church, the house, and the barn are filled with foul and evil creatures.

Creepy dolls possessed by something evil. Derranged souls with murder in their eyes. So many horrible things wait for you in the dark.

They are The Forsaken.

This is twisting maze of corridors through old school horror, there's nothing the same from scene to scene and the sets are usually filled with amazing detail. It's like going through a sea of nightmare fuel. I'm going to guess that they've updated a few things within this one for this year as they are typically wont to do...

Continuing on through our journey into madness, we find ourselves in a 3-D wonderland...but something is very much not right with the world that we've just left...

He sees you when you're sleeping.

He knows when you're awake.

Put on your 3-D glasses and enter Creepo's twisted tale of Holiday horror!

It's a eye-popping nightmare of demonic elves, killer toys, and mutant snowmen. Santa is dead, Creepo lives.

When they added this last year, I was pretty happy that it had taken over Delirium, since that wasn't really scary in my opinion. Cool? Yes, but lacked the punch...Creepo's definitely fits that bill for many and offers up quite the unique spin on 3-D and clowns. If you're going to do them, do something new and ScareHouse has delivered just that.

Finally, we end up with a classic. The thing that Pittsburgh is known for amongst horror fans the world over. Zombies. I mean, you just can't get away from these guys...they're everywhere these days and not having them in some capacity almost goes against some unspoken code out there. That said, ScareHouse's treatment of them is definitely unique...

A tribute to our living dead legacy as Zombie Capital of the World!

You can run down Carson street, you can hide in Primanti Bros, but you can not escape this walking dead Apocalypse!

The final haunt of ScareHouse is an action packed escape from hordes of the hungry dead.

Again, this was something I was happy to see new for last year. The previous bit of the attraction that occupied this space was a bit too vague and conceptual. While very cool, it just didn't seem to fit with Halloween. However, they replaced it with something really amazing and it shouldn't be missed out on at all.

That's not all though, there's another new addition for this year's event. The Basement. I've already written about this before as I mentioned above, but here's the rundown of what you can expect from this one...

Underneath ScareHouse, there is a massive basement.

No more than two people enter at once ... but there are many of us waiting for you in the dark.

You will be touched.

You will be restrained.

You will be scared out of your mind.

I'm still not sold on this, it does cost extra. How much extra? A full $19.99 (or $17.99x2 for two people) extra. That's the same price that the main haunt is. So if you're wanting to experience everything that ScareHouse has to offer, it's going to cost you nearly $40 at the cheapest end. I'm just not sure about that kind of thing to be honest. I'm sure it'll be an amazing experience for those brave enough, but that price makes it a tough sell. From what I've seen Terror Dome in Las Vegas seems to have nailed it with making it a perk for those who get an upgraded ticket...we'll see how this one goes though.

So, there ya have it. Everything that's old, yet most likely containing new things within it again for this year's ScareHouse in Etna, PA just outside of Pittsburgh. As we wrote in our review from last year, "If you're within 3 hours, just go already." I still stick by that as it's easily the one of the best that I've been to over the years and there's always something new and interesting out there.
