[Haunts] Netherworld Unleashes The Boogeyman

Time to head on down to Atlanta and another of the giants of independent haunting, Netherworld. Operating since 1997, this one of a kind massive labyrinth of fear has been wreaking havoc on anyone who dares to enter. Not only are they renowned for their special effects and many of the crew part of The Walking Dead TV show, the sheer size of the place is intimidating as well.

Running for a completely insane 37 nights this year, there's plenty of time for you to head on down to check things out. Once October 4th hits they're open every single night until Nov 3rd. I've done my share of crazy schedules, but this one takes the cake.

This year, they've got something special in store for everyone brave enough to wander into the basement. In the past it's been many things and even part of the main attraction, but not this time. Nope, they've gone and awoken something else all together devious and sadistic to feast on the innocents.

What you ask? Good question...let's meet Freddy Kruger, er um...

The Boogeyman
"Six innocent people are trapped in comas unable to escape a nightmare world of their deepest darkest fears. Is it an unusual medical condition or the work of a legendary creature from childhood story tales… The Boogeyman? Now you must physically enter into their dreams to uncover the shocking truth!"
Freddy Kruger, is that you? You really haven't aged well if it is and I really suggest seeing a doctor about some of those growths.

Alright, I'm sensing a bit (read: a ton) of Nightmare on Elm Street stuff going on in here, big time. I mean we've got dreams, patients, a hospital, shared past at a school where murders occurred...there's even a nursery rhyme that goes along with this legendary creature.

We seeing a trend at all here with all this? Even just a little bit?

 The Boogeyman Nursery Rhyme
(Collected from the homes of the victims)?
Better not step upon a crack
Boogeyman put you in his sack!
Break a mirror or spill some salt
Boogeyman says it all your fault!
Walk under a ladder or see a Black cat
Boogeyman says you’re tasty and fat!
If I should die before I wake
Boogeyman gets my soul to take!
Run as far and fast as you can
There is no escaping the Boogeyman!

What's next, a guest appearance by a young Johnny Depp? I admit it, I do like the twist they've put on it. It's a new angle and I'm sure that the experience will be great with some mind bending effects, but let's be honest here. Anyone that's seen a single movie from the franchise, or even just heard of it, can pin this one down to exactly what's going on here and what they're emulating for the story around this.

Typically I'm not this harsh on things, but good lord. This one just telegraphs with a lightening bolt where it's coming from and I'm most definitely not the first person to say it. If I am...holy crap, some folks just have their eyes and ears welded shut. I can't be the only one that sees it, right? Have a look for yourself and tell me you don't see it either.

I've never been to Netherworld and I'm sure what I'm saying about this won't be too popular with some folks, but I have to say what I feel about things. I mean it's why you read the stuff I put on here most of the time, right? So, I can't let even these guys slide. Even if I think it's a great idea and it'll be put together amazingly well, it's just too obvious.

Especially when you look what their main haunt is...

The Dead Ones

During the horrors of the Blood Night when the beasts of the NETHERWORLD were released on the earth the Illuminati battled to turn back the darkness. At last they were victorious and the sun returned but the price was a vast depletion of their powers. The noxious city of YS long held below the waves rose once again freeing Banshees and other twisted nightmares to hunt once more.

But worst of all, the mask of the Inquisitor, the Herald of the Dead Ones, was lost. Now some say a new Herald has risen and soars the night with flocks of Banshees watching the cities of men. If the Herald has returned, then he will report to the ancient powers that dwell in the eternal darkness between worlds. He will tell them that the rituals have been forgotten and a time of reckoning must come.

Great original idea and why they didn't keep with that for the whole Boogeyman thing, I'll never understand. I'm sure that the main attraction is going to be insane and even more mental than ever before with everything that they put into this show. It really is awe inspiring to be honest. The back story they've got going for it really is awesome and I can't wait to see it in person if we get the chance. And in combination with what's going on down below it, should be one helluva time. How can it not be?

All the snark aside as I am definitely skeptical of the back story they used and where they got inspiration from for it, I'm still looking forward to seeing these guys in action later this year. Maybe they can show me that there is a difference and it matters little...

You can find more information about tickets, dates of operations and an apparent long lost Nightmare on Elm Street script on the official Netherworld website.
