[Anime] Hayao Miyazaki Announces Retirement

Well, I didn't expect to wake up to this one today but it definitely took me for a loop. Ghibli president Koju Hoshino at the Venice Film Festival yesterday made the announcement, although there will be a more formal press conference next week.

It would appear that after 50 years of making some of the memorable and beloved anime movies, the 72 year old Miyazaki is finally ready to give it up. Not sure how I really feel about this right now to be honest. Some of my favorite movies of all time were made by him and it's always a sad day when a film making legend in any field decides to stop making new works.

Miyazaki's current, and apparently last, film "The Wind Rises" (Kaze Tachinu) is doing amazingly well despite early criticism by critics and other internet outlets like Japan's 2ch. Maybe going through that was the final straw? I can't be sure...but this also has to be taken with a little grain of salt too.

This wouldn't be the first time that he's "retired", not by a long shot, but it does seem that there's been an overall slow down with his work as opposed to earlier periods of time. I actually hope that he might have one more in him but if not...he's given us millions of amazing memories and I'm sure that Studio Ghibli will continue to do so, it just won't be entirely the same...

Either way, thanks for everything you've given us over the past half century and good luck to you in whatever you find yourself doing in the future!
