[Cons] SDCC Rooms Already Sold Out - Is SDCC Too Big?

Yep, that's right. Rooms for this year's San Diego Comic Con are sold out already. In fact, they were gone within 20minutes of them being available yesterday. That's just absolutely insane and it raises a big question for me. When is a con too big for its own good?

For years now there's been tons of horror stories about SDCC and how hard it is to not only get a ticket to the event, but now hotels seem to be even more of a luxury. Right now it seems like if you don't get in within the first nanosecond you're not getting one. God forbid you have a flaky internet connection or something else happens, then you might as well just give up the ghost completely.

I'm actually genuinely curious as to what fans see in the event at all anymore. From the stories of overcrowding, waiting for hours and not getting into a panel, Hall H camping, waiting for exclusives only to find they're sold and more, it seems more like a chore than anything else to me.

So, what exactly is it? Is this just fandom being fans of something over what actually goes on or what? Maybe it's just the spectacle of the whole thing, but I can't really see much of a point to go to this one at all. In the past we've wanted to and still say "Oh that'd be cool", but then we realize that we are likely to see the same amount of crazy and awesome stuff at local cons. That and if we wanted to wait in lines that long we'd head to Walmart during the holiday season. I mean, just look at the image below from SDCCblog. Not exactly "fun looking", and that's just part of the line for Hall H.

Again, we've never been so can't say for sure just what exactly the hype is all about entirely.

Hall H Line, doesn't look like "fun"
Maybe it's time they start thinking about capping the event at a lower number, stopping panel room camping or something else along those lines. Sure, there's a lot of work being done to the convention center and all that to add capacity, but I doubt it will fix the problems that SDCC has given itself.

Until they get things in order and maybe start realizing that they're event is more waiting than doing, we likely won't be going anytime soon.

Either way, if you're looking for a hotel, good luck to ya...you'll need it!
